Since the pentatonic scale is native to virtually all folk cultures of the world, it lends itself particularly well to this text. For the contrasting sections of the music, the prohibitive triton is chosen for its apt conveyance of Heberts sentiment that height and depth can be overcome through a determined effort. The Flute and the Tuba represent the opposite spectrums of distance. Within this space, singers praise may either grow or fly. The Marimba is a suitable voice for the pentatonic scale and can be claimed as an instrument by cultures of "every corner" of the world. A text with such an imperative tone requires a commanding voice, a voice the Trumpet and Trombone possess.
Herberts text transcends religious usage; the church is singled out, but notice the burden on the heart. Let all the world, what a profound call! What better way for the world to end its ceaseless wars than for its every corner to a contribute a line of counterpoint, or a voice of harmony to a song of shared commonality, in which we glorify not ourselves over others, but instead, in submission to the shared song, we sing in pursuit of a reality greater than ourselves?
