Composed by Mario Cruz. Score and set of parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.50776).Under the Influence is an up-tempo "burning" swing tune and was originally commissioned by the TCU Jazz Band under the direction (and "influence") of Curtis Wilson. The opening main theme features the brass section in a "psuedo - acapella" brass chorale and focuses on some tight harmonic voicings, therefore precise intonation and rhythmic timing should be emphasized. The secondary theme is a duet with the fifth trumpet and first tenor evolving to an ensemble interlude that leads to an open tenor solo. After the tenor solo, a rather demanding saxophone soli followed by a shout chorus resolves to a recap of the secondary theme duet. Lead trumpet high note is concert D. Due to it's tight harmonic voicings, technically demanding saxophone work and fast tempo, it should be considered a moderately advanced piece and is best suited for a band with a "locked-in" rhythm section.5/5/4/g/p/b/d.
