This profound setting of the familiar William Billings hymn 'Chester' is the basis for the material in this dramatic tone poem for symphonic band. The hymn tune is presented in a straightforward fashion after the powerful introduction. This is followed by the main body of the piece, which is a deconstructed version of the melodic line placed in contemporary rhythmic and harmonic settings. Both color and rhythmic vitality are obtained from extensive use of percussion. and the meter changes, while frequent, have a natural feel. The close of the piece is emotionally stirring and artistically satisfying.
