As the title suggests, this composition utilizes pizzacato ostinato patterns and lush, lyrical melodies to create a dance movement with an air of mystery. This delightful work introduces students to minor keys and interesting but simple musical counterpo. Opening with a light pizzicato ostinato in the upper strings and an eerie repeating pattern in the basses, cellos offer the first of two musical themes in the piece. The second theme is introduced by violins 1 and 2 at measure 11. Throughout the work, these two themes weave through each section of instruments. The tempo marking of "quarter note 144" should be carefully observed. At measure 50, violin 1 has an optional octave divisi during the final statement of the melody. Slightly more advanced than Beginning Strings, this series begins to involve more position work and a slightly more complex rhythmic figures. Rehearsal piano is often provided. Ideal for middle school and smaller high school programs. Grade 2 - 2.5.
