In 1890 The High School Cadets, a popular drill team attached to the very first high school in Washington D.C., asked John Philip Sousa to write a march for the group. They requested a "better" march than the one Sousa had written for their rivals The National Fencibles. Indeed, The High School Cadets became one of the most popular of Sousa's 136 marches. Pi Scheffer wrote this fine arrangement with Dixieland combo, which was made extremely popular by the recording made by the famous Dutch Swing College Band.
