Published in The Charlestown Collection , 1803, p. 28. Holden attributed the words to "Dr.. Philip. Doddridge ," 1702-1751, but these lyrics could be not be found in Doddridge's Hymns Founded on Various Texts , 1755. The lyrics apparently appeared first in John Rippon 's A Selection of Hymns From the Best Authors , 1787, as Hymn 214, where it is unattributed. Rippon's Hymn 214 is L. M. D.. 88. 88. 88. 88. , whereas Holden's work is L. M.. 88. 88. , using only the first four lines of Rippon's first eight-line stanza.
